\"Bold and Beautiful\"

Introduction:

A decade before partition, a popular dancer in Aligarh, Uttar Pardesh, India, gave birth to a girl and named her Putli.

At a very tender age, the daughter started receiving dancing lessons from her talented mother and subsequently became a skillful dancer herself.

The mother aspired to be an actress. However, her hopes could not be materialized. Presumably that inspired cute little Putli, in her later life, to fulfill her mother’s unrealized dreams.

In 1956 putli along with her family came to Karachi to visit her relatives. Around that time, a reputed film director, Najam Naqui, who had migrated to Pakistan from India, happened to be in Karachi, as well.

He was in search of a young actress for his next movie.

By chance, Najam met this girl and he was stunned by her sheer beauty, facial expression and sweet smile smeared all over her innocent face.

To cut this long story short, Najam eventually found the ideal face which was perfect for his upcoming movie Additionally, he had a strong hunch that she was eminently suited for the role.

Her Promising Career as Actress:

Thus Putli changed her name to Shamim Ara and became the lead actress of the film ‘Kunwari Baywa‘ (1956, director: Najam Naqui, starring: Shamim Ara, Ayaz senior, Babbu Begum, Ishrat Sultana)

Bad luck, ‘Kunwari Baywa’ could not succeed at the box office. Still Shamim Ara became the heartthrob of innumerable moviegoers due to her electrifying performance in her debut film.

In the same year, director Roop k. Shori, who was also an immigrant from India, worked along with filmmaker J.C. Anand.

Both of them signed in Shamim Ara as a side heroine opposite Aslam Pervez, for the film ‘Miss ’56’

Shamim Ara who was in her twenties then, was on her way to fame. Moreover, on Elias Rashdi’s advice she left Karachi and settled in Lahore.

Further, Rashdi also urged his colleagues to cooperate with Shamim Ara in her movie career.

Director Anwar Kamal Pasha, convinced of Shamim Ara’s dedication, offered her a role in his historical movie, ‘Anarkali.’

Shamim Ara smartly dubbed as ‘Anarkali’s youner sister, did full justice to her role. Her initial success, bolstered by later movies like ‘Aalam Ara’, ‘Roop mati’, ‘Baaz Bahadur’ and ‘Raaz’ gave her a boost.

Soon thereafter her identity began to emerge. Side by side, she continued to appear in the films which were produced in Karachi.

By the early 1960s, she had established herself as the foremost actress of the Pakistani cinema.

In Karachi she worked in director Jafar Bukhari’s film ‘Faisala‘, director Rafiq Rizvi’s film ‘Apna paraya’, director Munawwar Rasheed’s film ‘Insaan badalta hai,’ to name a few.

Shamim Ara, the great communicator, is an unobtrusively brilliant lady.

Speaking of acting, her performance kept getting better. She gained renown as the lead lady in numerous movies. As an actress, she worked altogether in ninety films.

Her Movies:

‘Wah ray zamanay’, ‘Do ustaad’, ‘Jaa’edad’, (Shamim Ara’s first Punjabi film),

‘Bhabi’, ‘Izzat’, ‘Zameen ka chand’, ‘Qaidi’, ‘Zamana kya kahay ga’,

‘Mehboob’, ‘Inqilaab’, ‘Mera Qusoor kya’, ‘Shikari’, ‘Seema’, ‘Dulhan’,

‘Taangey wala’, ‘Baap ka baap’, ‘Tanha’, ‘Shabab’, ‘Maikhana’,

‘Pyar ki saza’, ‘Chingari’, ‘Haveli’, ‘Faishan’, ‘Dil kay tukray’ ‘Hamraz’,

‘Khilona’, ‘Aaliya’, ‘Paraye Aag’, ‘Wehshi’ ‘Ungaray’, ‘Suhaag’ and ‘Night club’.

Her quiet yet perfectly distinct voice is a tape recorder’s dream. Her movies followed one another like so many withered leaves blown across the small lawn of time.

Pondering over her movie career as an actress, she characteristically emphasized, how much of a learning experience it was.

Shamim Ara is a diligent artist and has assiduously been honing her craft over the decades.

Further, Shamim Ara owes her rocket-like rise in the films to the highly competent film crew of the 1950s and ’60s.

Furthermore, Shamim Ara’s unforgettable role in the films ‘Doraha’, ‘Saheli’, ‘Dil mera dharkan teri, ‘Aanchal’, ‘Ik tera sahara’, ‘Meray mehboob’, ‘Jaan-e-Aarzoo’, ‘Parda’, ‘Majboor’, ‘Zaib-un-nisa’ and ‘Khawab aur zindigi’, were positive, uplifting and truthful, when Pakistani cinema was at the height of its splendor.

Movies like ‘Saiqa’, ‘Hill station’, ‘Zindigi aik safar hai’, ‘Waqt’, ‘Dil-e-bay taab’, ‘Aansoo bun gaye moti’ and ‘Khaak aur khoon’ were not only monumental dramatic landmarks, but they were brought to life by an award-winning cast, as well.

Shamim Ara’s commitment in the films like ‘Naila’, ‘Aag ka darya’, ‘Saalgira’ and ‘Lakhoan mein aik‘ found their way to our brains by way of our hearts.

‘Parooti’ or ‘Paaro’, played by Shamim Ara in the film ‘Deodas’ was, indeed, the height of her caliber.

Her Emerging As Director:

Over and above, Shamim Ara’s distinction hinges on her being the first woman director of the Pakistan film industry.

However, her contributions extend beyond the direction.

Besides, her mastery of the brilliant direction always brightens the film and carries the day.

Hence there is no question about her understanding of the possibilities of the film direction.

Her first film as director was ‘Jeeyo aur jeenay do’, which was followed by high quality movies like ‘Playboy’, ‘Meray apnay’, ‘Miss Hong Kong ‘, Miss Singapore’, ‘Miss Colombo’, ‘Lady smuggler’ and ‘Lady commando’.

Majority of the above-mentioned films were a success partly due to her exemplary direction, personal observation and prolong experience as an actress.

Also, luck has been on her side most of the time.

Her Marital Up Dawn:

Years ago, news had been circulating about her chances of getting married to actor Mohammad Ali. But that did not workout for both of them.

Shamim Ara’s first husband, Sardar Rind, died in a traffic accident. Later, she got married to Majeed Karim (Shamim Ara’s second husband) which ended up in a separation.

After a while, she wedded film director Fareed Ahmed (Shamim Ara’s third husband) which, too, ended in a divorce.

She married for the fourth time to filmmaker-writer, Dabeer-ul-Hasan. The screenplay of most of the films directed by Shamim Ara were written by Dabeer-ul-Hasan.

“Unlucky in Love”

Her Nigar awards:

In 1960 Shamim Ara won for best actress in the film ‘Saheli’.
In 1964 Shamim Ara won for best actress in the film ‘Farangi’.
In 1965 Shamim Ara won for best actress in the film ‘Naila’.
In 1967 Shamim Ara won for best actress in the film ‘Lakhoan mein aik’
In 1968 Shamim Ara won for best actress in the film ‘Saiqa’.
In 1968 Shamim Ara won for best producer in the film ‘Saiqa‘.
In 1989 Shamim Ara won for best actress for the film ‘Tees mar khan’.(Besides being the  second and last Punjabi film of Shamim Ara, ‘Tees mar khan’ also happened to be her last film as an actress).
1n 1993 Shamim Ara won the special award for best director in the film ‘Haati meray saathi’.
In 1994 Shamim Ara won for best director in the film ‘Aakhri mujra’
In 1995 Shamim Ara won for best director in the film ‘Munda bigra jaey’.

Shamim Ara successfully dramatized socially impactful stories-and in the process she changed lives.

Never before in the Pakistani culture had one woman as an actress and then as director risen so high so fast.

She is well-known for her unrelenting discipline – conformity is the rule, hard work the currency.

The likes of Shamim Ara are an extremely rare commodity. She is one of the few highly trusted artist with the guts to lead the way.

A Night to Remeber so long_Lollywood style May 8, 2008

DUBAI: On Thursday night, the lobby of the Novotel hotel was overrun by the who’s who of Pakistani society. From film actress Meera outfitted in a snug polka dot top to photographer Khawar Riaz sporting one of his usual white kurtas, to Samina and Usman Peerzada looking as elegant as ever, the stars of the film, fashion and television world had all gathered for the Lux Style Awards.

As model ZQ laughingly remarked: “It’s just so wonderful to see everyone together in one place.” Designer of Sublime, Sara Shahid, said that if nothing else, the Lux Style Awards had provided her with the opportunity to meet many fashion personalities she had previously only heard of. The mood was tense yet speculative as a few hours before the event, designer Hassan Sheheryar Yasin, blatantly admitted that he had no hopes of winning while Maheen Kardar Ali of Karma said that she was very hopeful. Meanwhile model ZQ refused to talk about the event and Board of Governor member Yusuf Sallahuddin was endlessly pestered to reveal the secrets of the envelope.

The results of the awards ended up creating quite a stir in the audience with more than a few shockers. The most surprising award was probably Best Fashion Photographer, which went to photographer Usman Saeed even though Rizwan Baig of Deevees or Ather Shahzad had been touted as sure-shot winners. One could also hear gasps and exclamations from the audience when Karma were declared the Best Women’s Wear designer over designers like Sana Safinaz who have many years of more experience than they do. However there were no surprises in the Best Hair and Makeup category which went to Nabila Maqsood, the Best Menswear designer which went to Deepak Perwani for the second time in a row, Best Bridal Wear designer which went to Faeza Samee (making it her second award too) and Best Male Model which went to Daniyal Arshad.

Though ZQ was a hot favourite in the Best Female Model category, many felt that the award was going to go to Eman Ali and so it was a pleasant surprise to see Zainab Qayum walk away with the statuette.

The most shocking results were the Viewer’s Choice Best Television Actress and Best Television Actor awards where Aamina Haq and Hummauyun Saeed walked away with awards while senior performers like Sania Saeed, Bushra Ansaria, Abid Ali and Faisal Qureshi looked on. There were fewer surprises in the Best Film Actor category where Shaan won for ‘Commando’ and the Best Film Actress category where Zara Sheikh was the winner for ‘Laaj’.

As expected the Best Music Album/Band went to Ali Zafar for ‘Hukka Pani’ and the Best Music Video award went to Shoaib Mansoor for ‘Anarkali’.

Whilst most celebrities just swept in on the day of the show, the stars of the show had been rehearsing for a few days prior to the actual event. This explained their puffy eyes and aching muscles, for as television actress Sadia Imam said: “I am so exhausted because the Indian choreographer has been working us tirelessly.”

Who were the stars of the show? The five beauty icons, fashion models Zainab Qayum and Aamina Haq, television actress Sadia Imam and film actresses Sana and Reesham. Each beauty icon was given a separate segment in the show, portraying a distinct aspect of beauty. The show began with Sadia Imam’s rendition of the power of beauty where she performed alongside the Shaolin Monks from Beijing: a riveting mixture of martial art moves and modern dance, this segment was a powerful start to the Lux Style Awards 2007.

The next segment dealt with the passion of beauty aptly narrated through the story of Mumtaz Mahal enacted by Reesham. The performance took the audience through the story of Mumtaz Mahal falling in love with Shah Jehan to the construction of the Taj Mahal and was a touching rendition of a legendary romance. The main objection that many in the audience had to this segment was the fact that the soundtrack of ‘Devdas’ was used as opposed to local music. “Are they trying to tell us that we don’t have sufficient talent in our music industry?” asked Tauqeer Ahmed who is the publisher of two fashion magazines.

From the subcontinent to the pyramids, the next segment dealt with the mystery of beauty with Zainab Qayum playing the role of an Egyptian queen. In complete contrast to the mystical Egyptian dances in this segment were the thumkas and matkas of the ‘romance of beauty’ segment presented by film actress Sana. The last segment explored the ‘celebration of beauty’ with Aamina Haq and a troupe of dancers presenting the Latino segment.

While the main attraction of the night were these five segments, equally entertaining performances were put in by singers Fakhir Mehmood (who revised one of his songs especially for the Lux Style Awards), Strings, who had the audience singing along to their popular hits, and Ali Zafar who threw the organizers into a frenzy by jumping off into the audience impromptu. But though our music stars did us proud, it was Indian sensation Sonu Nigam who carried the night. Sighs of, “I wish he had stayed on longer,” could be heard from many in the audience.

Indian actress Priyanka Chopra was also a hit with the audience since her performance was in many ways head and shoulders above the rest.

While film, television and music were all important components of the Lux Style Awards 2007, it was at the end of the day, a night to celebrate style. Stylist Tariq Amin was responsible for styling all celebrities for the night and he did a fantastic job by ensuring individual looks for each star. On display at the red carpet were clothes by designers Sara Shahid, Sana Safinaz, Hassan Sheheryar Yasin, Karma, Nickie Nina, Beegee, Nilofar Shahid, Deepak Perwani, Yasir Saeed and Ather Ali Hafeez.

As the show neared its end, discontent and disapproval was in the air and many could be heard complaining about either the event or the judging system. Yet few can disagree with the fact that the star of Pakistani fashion and glamour has hardly shone as brightly as it did in Dubai that night.

Babra Sharif Biography

Babra Sharif was the foremost figure in the our Pakistani film industry during the 1980s and late 1970s. She started her career with some commercials. She worked with many famous names like Shahid, Nadeem, Waheed Murad, Ghulam Mohyedin and Muhammad Ali Sahab. She had great success in Urdu films in Pakistan. Babra Sharif did a variety of roles which proved her versatility as an actress.

Babra Sharif acted in more than 100 movies and her first film was Shamim Ara’s “Bhool” in 1974. Soon a string of super hits followed such as “Aag”, “Salakhain”, “Baaghi Hasina”, “Miss Hong Kong” etc, but her success graph moved swiftly upwards, making her the most sought after and highly paid actress of all time. Babra Sharif was barely 12 Years when she appeared in the famous ad and was immediately signed by Shabab Kiraanvi for “Mera Naam Hai Mohabbat”. \Her entry into movies became something of a phenomenon because the famed film producer took Babra on without a screen test. People were surprised at Shabab Kiraanvi choice of a heroine opposite Ghulam Mohiyuddin for a movie demanding high emotions.

For over two decades she was the number one of the Pakistan film industry. Her name in credits ensured success at the box-office. Babra Sharif went on to become Lollywood answer to glamour, style, versatility and an alluring, on-screen appeal not even remotely upheld by her successors. Her reign as Pakistan most successful actress lasted more than the career span of all those who later followed the diminutive diva into the film industry. Babra Sharif received a Nigar Award for “Shabana”, a super hit, and another Nigar Award for “Tina” and had received this Award 8 times.
In 1978 she married to film star Shahid, but the couple soon divorced. She also worked in Nadan Nadia, a Pakistan television comedy play by Anwar Maqsood. She also did Lux 50 years celebration commercial. Babra Sharif currently owns a jewellery shop in Karachi.
Believing in bowing out gracefully rather than being booted out, Babra Sharif was still a lucrative name when she called it quits ·A lesson that needs urgent learning by some of the later-day heroines. Since her departure, Lollywood has not been the same.

It was not simply a matter of matching her success graph as no heroine was able to cross the long distance between becoming an actress and reaching an icon status. Babra Sharif did that. She holds the distinction of covering that distance to be called a beauty icon, a title not awarded to anyone in the 50-plus years of Pakistan film industry. In a star-studded Lux Style Awards ceremony held in Karachi in 2003, Babra Sharif name was announced for the beauty icon award.
